Frequently asked questions about our best savings accounts for £50,000

What is the best savings account for £50,000?

A £50,000 lump sum gives you options, depending on what you're looking to achieve.

Some high-interest accounts require higher minimum deposits, so £50,000 could open up a wider range of rates.

But you could earn more interest by locking some of your money away for longer, while keeping a blend of Notice accounts and Instant Access accounts to cover your short-term needs.

Do I pay tax on interest from £50,000?

Whether you pay tax on the interest you earn depends on a range of factors, such as whether you use Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) and your Income Tax bracket. The Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) lets you earn some interest tax-free, provided you're not an additional rate taxpayer.

Basic rate taxpayers get a £1,000 tax-free PSA each year, while higher rate taxpayers get £500.

So, if the interest you earn on £50,000 is less than your PSA, you won't owe tax on it. If it's over your PSA, you'll pay tax on the excess at your usual Income Tax rate.

Will my £50,000 be protected under the FSCS?

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protects eligible cash deposits up to £120,000 per client, per banking group.

Long-term compound interest, topping up your savings, or receiving another lump sum could take you over the FSCS limit. This is why some savers with larger deposits use savings platforms like Flagstone, spreading their cash across multiple banks to stay within protection limits.

While our FSCS tracker shows how the scheme protects your deposits in Flagstone, it can't include any savings you have outside of our savings platform. If you hold deposits elsewhere, this may affect your overall FSCS protection.

Should I split £50,000 across more than one bank?

£50,000 sits comfortably within the protection limit, so you don't need to split it for safety. But spreading your deposit across accounts from different banks could help you secure better rates when they become available, or balance easy access with higher earnings.

Savings platforms like Flagstone let you divide your cash across high-interest savings accounts from 65+ banks, all in one place.
